4 Tips to Promote Teamwork Within a Nursing Unit

Nurses continually use teamwork skills in the workplace, from cooperating with other nurses to developing care plans with doctors; and working as a team is essential. Nurses face different tasks that need cooperation, such as organizing patient care and sharing and tracking information with doctors. Energetically working to enhance teamwork in your workplace can help you set more efficient nursing practices and grow your career as a nurse. Here is how:

1) Be the first teamwork-minded 

Nothing is more contagious to promote a new good habit than being the example: 

Be the first to give a hand to another nurse with a difficult patient; help another colleague stay on schedule. By this, you can see that this teamwork attitude will come back. Your personal choices can set an example for being a successful part of a nursing team. 

You can use your positive attitude to bond your team and show others the importance of working as a team. Maintain an elevated standard by seeking opportunities to help others, listening to others, and knowing everybody in your team.

2) Growth your skills 

When members of the nursing team improve their skills and knowledge, they can strengthen the team. It’s important that every member of the nursing staff can share their individual expertise with the team. Boost teamwork by letting everyone teach about their passions and learn from others. If you are willing to continue your nursing education, check out some programs oriented in leadership, since these programs can give you the tools to lead the team and guide it through teamwork.

3) Ask for feedback 

For every team member, it is important to know that their opinions matter, that they are valued, and that they can come to you with any difficulties or concerns. Make an effort to promote open communication by asking each team member whether anything prevents them from realizing their full potential. Allow them to talk about any concerns they may have and any suggestions they may make to improve processes. It is of the essence that you act on the comments you’ve received.

4) Set clear guidelines 

Is everyone in the team aware of the expectations you have from them? Make a list of guidelines and write them down. Then, ensure that all your nurses are up to date.

Don’t expect the vision of teamwork to take off overnight. It takes practice, dedication, and lots of promotion; remember that it is also contagious. Once the idea begins to riddle, you’ll see a new and improved attitude in your unit.
